National Club Championships 2011/12

This year we have entered the Open, Major & Intermediate sections:

In the Open, our opponents will be Mushrooms & Wood Green (as per last year). Our first game is home v Mushrooms (date yet to be agreed, but will be a Sunday between 12 & 26 February).

In the Major (average U175, maximum 205), our first round game was a home match v Athenaeum, played on Sunday 22 January 2012. Despite being considerably outgraded on most boards, we managed a 2½-2½ draw, but unfortunately lost on board count.

In the Intermediate (average U145, maximum 170), we have a bye in the first round. In the second round, we will play Bishops Stortford @ Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. (Date yet to be decided, but has to be played before 11 March 2012).

Stevenson match v Rainham

On Wednesday 8 February 2012, we played an away match v Rainham, losing 4½-1½. It all started very promising, as we outgraded them (based upon the new grades) on the bottom 5 boards. The first result was our win on Board 3. Unfortunately we then lost on boards 4 & 2. The remaining three games were fairly evenly balanced as the time control at move 35 arrived. However we then lost on Boards 6 & 5, before a draw was agreed lastly on Board 1.

In the Masters, (which was a 9 round tournament, running from Wednesday 28 December 2011 to Thursday 5 January 2012) we had Paul Talsma (206). Final score 4 (finishing 62nd= of 117).

In the Christmas Tournament (which was a 5 round tournament, running from Wednesday 28 December 2011 to Friday 30 December 2011) we had Chris Howell (198) & David Heath (159) in Section A, and Joshua Pink (144) in Section B. Final scores: Chris Howell 4 (finishing 1st=), David Heath 2 (finishing 12th= out of 18), Joshua Pink 3 (finishing 5th= out of 19, and sharing the U145 grading prize).

In the Weekend Tournament - Minor (which was a 5 round tournament, running from Friday 30 December 2011 to Sunday 1 January 2012) we had Joshua Pink (144). Final score 3½ (finishing 5th= out of 50).

In the New Year Morning (which was a 4 round tournament, running from Monday 2 January 2012 to Thursday 5 January 2012) we had David Heath (159) and Joshua Pink (144) in Section A. Final scores: David Heath 2½ (finishing 5th=), Joshua Pink 1½ (finishing 13th= out of 19).

In the New Year Afternoon (which was a 4 round tournament, running from Monday 2 January 2012 to Thursday 5 January 2012) we had Joshua Pink (144) in Section A. Final score 1½ (finishing 12th= of 22).

This is a difficult venue to find on a dull damp evening and resulted in one of our players arriving too late to play his game which resulted in an early loss of one point. However, Ian Clark had a fine win followed by Bob Fenn and Mike Peek so we ended up with a drawn match.
